Power of Prayer to Change Consiousness

-by Rev. Dr. Toni

In a lecture given in London nearly eighty years ago, Dr Annie Besant spoke of a ‘wave of mysticism passing over the world’. Such a wave seems to be apparent today, as so many people express a hunger, an inner yearning, for a genuine spiritual experience.

Not satisfied with the answers which either science or religion has to offer, many have sought out teachers, gurus, psychics of varying degrees of reliability, anyone who seems to promise fulfillment of an inner need.

At the same time, science today seems to be pointing beyond itself or at least beyond its materialistic boundaries to what we might call a ‘metascience’ which admits the possibility that consciousness may be primary. And even in many more traditional religions, there has been a re-awakening to the esoteric wisdom hidden within the outer forms, esoteric wisdom which by its very nature participates in the mystical.

The philosopher of religion, Hans Jonas, has suggested that there exists a historical sequence of development that leads from objectification, as he calls it, to interiorization.

He refers specifically to the movement throughout the centuries from religious knowledge or theory to religions of experience. This sequential development from the theoretical to the practical is not only a development from generation to generation, but is something that must occur within each person.

The New Thought movement was represented this year at the World Parliament of Churches —  it’s the only Truly AMERICAN religion. What makes it so American?    It is a mystical religion that is very pragmatic –

I believe the heart of it is the ability to make a difference in our lives…This is to say that our ideas, our beliefs, all that constitutes our basic world-view must become known experience in such a manner as to bring about a radical change in our lives.  We have moved from accepting everything on Faith to have an experience of Faith – Holmes saying UNLESS we are demonstrating we have no right to call ourselves RELIGIOUS SCIENTISTS – or in our case People of New Thought.

Basically, what I’m talking about is that the World’s view of God and Religious experience has undergone a shift over the centuries and each of us in our own experience, seems to go through similar shifts.

Our theme this month is on the power of prayer.  Today our topic is on Affirmative Prayer – and rather than teach you the steps of Prayer or the how-to or even the why to –   But the very way we pray tells us a great deal about how we view God and whether or not Religion is something we believe in or something we experience.  Where are we on the continuum?

There’s a story that I think somewhat subtly says this:

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush, a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? “Because” explained the King, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.

What PICTURE do you have of God?  You can tell this by the way you pray…Examine our prayer today —

  1. When you pray for things to be perfect, looking only for the calm mts, sky, and lake — annoyed at yourselves because you get sick or because you let something happen that you wish wouldn’t are subtly saying that God is —  that God is the FIXER and something is wrong with you

Someone who is going to punish you for every mistake you make

  1. When you pray even the prayer – THY will be done… notice First if you’re saying that only when things aren’t going your way –It’s up to us when it is good – and up to God the rest of the time?

We’ve talked in the past a lot about this one – basically when we pray we are surrendering to God – which is another way of surrendering to our Highest Good – but that Good isn’t something predetermined by someone else.   WE get to choose what we experience ––everything we say is really our way of AFFIRMING what it is we INTEND to experience.   There is no outside agenda that we have to fit into…  We are the makers of our own destiny.  Most of us just don’t want to choose… We hide behind “but if only I KNEW what it was that I was supposed to do” – as if someone or something outside ourselves would tell us…  We need to be still and then to ACT on our impulses…and TRUST our impulses.

Many of us are afraid to commit to what we want thinking that someone outside ourselves will hold us to it – We make it up — so WE can change it!  Too many people even use Affirmative Prayer vaguely –I want PEACE – well, what does YOUR picture of peace look like???

  • Or – do you tell God the way things should be-

We get a little fancier in New Thought – we call it outlining… This is what I want – but this is HOW you are to deliver it!We need to
be clear on the WHAT and let that which is larger than we determine the HOW – Have you ever noticed when your prayers are answered that they are always much more than you ever asked for even though the packaging may look different?

  1. When you think the ills of the world are acts of God

You Pray for example for nice weather – EMMETT FOX _- “What we call nature and climate, and the weather is really the out-picturing of the thoughts and feelings of humanity upon it…

The reason the North Pole is cold, and the equator is warm is because the whole world thinks that way.”

What we believe is the nature of God, we experience.

Affirmative prayer is the prayer that acknowledges the nature of God – and acknowledges that That Nature is Our nature…and then, of course, our experience changes – Life FLOWS – things work – because it the nature of God is Love, is Order, is Peace, is Abundance, is Harmony, etc.

  1. That God has it all planned out and we are just the puppets- a variation on Thy will be done…

I can’t do anything about it…
Karma – without correction;
Astrology – or personality types – or numerology
that DESTINES you or how about your GENETIC makeup?
Some things we accept as IS – and don’t even begin to pray for…

A subtle way of believing that God can do some things but not others   — is there anything in your life that is bothering you, but you haven’t been praying about?

What are the things we believe God can’t do anything about — Lawsuit; God can prosper a business but not give health; I do not think there is any one of us who is not limiting God in some respect because we all suffer limitation in some way..

  1. PLEASE HELP ME God – to pass a test; to find a job; to get through a rough time.

I know some of you have heard this one – but it bears repeating:

So far today, God, I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, haven’t been greedy, or grumpy, nasty or self-centered. I’m really glad about that.  But in a few minutes, God, I’m going to get out of bed, and then I’m going to need a lot of help.   Thank You.

Remember:  God can only do FOR us what it can do THROUGH us.

We want to have more money – we either have to SAVE more; Spend less or earn more… It’s not magic. If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.    Lao Tse
If we want HEALTH, we need to do the things that foster health. If we want to GET more of ANYTHING, we have to be GIVING more. Whatever we think we want, we have to BECOME first. It’s not HAVE, DO, BE but BE, DO, HAVE…

Mary Morrisey quotes this week:  “We can go to God with everything on our minds.  But once we pour out our souls, then it is time to listen while asking:  How can I see this differently?  What can I do?   I know many people who worry forever about finances or relationships and never do anything differently about how they handle them.  Remember, God can only do for us what God can do through us.  Practice not only asking for your life to be different; be willing to BE different.

Asking for magic – praying for something and DOING nothing…  What are you willing to give?  To do?

I pray and pray and nothing happens.

Prayer is meant to change us, not God…

Who would you have to be BEING to have whatever it is you think you want in your life?

We can only have that which is ours by right of consciousness. Even if you won a million dollars, you wouldn’t keep it..Or if you left a $100 bill in the middle of Grand Central Station and came back 3 days later.

  1. Some of us believe that certain people have an IN with God – we go to ministers, or certain friends to pray for us…because we think that person has more influence with God…WEDDING — no power vested in me either by my Church or by the State – by the power of Love that has brought you here together… In that power, you BECOME husband and wife.

Come to Church expecting to hear the ANSWERS…
IF YOU ARE NOT INVOLVED in MINISTRY –you think the answers are in the front of the Church.

Parents sometimes try to play God for their children

Ministers sometimes play God for their congregations (not this one ;-))

I AM the Lord thy God – I AM is the name of God – Beware of anyone who sets him or herself up as a TEACHER –or who tells you they have YOUR answer.

So, what am I saying today?  Prayer is not directing my thoughts outward to change circumstances – it is directing myself INWARD to understand the TRUTH of who I am…. And then Claiming and Accepting all the inheritance that is mine.

Scripture tells us — It is the Father’s Good Pleasure to Give you the Kingdom.  The only question that remains is ARE YOU READY TO RECEIVE??

Dr Seuss Treatment

If Dr. Seuss were to pray he would say..

There is no spot where God is not.  God is down, God is up — God is even in a cup.  God is love and love is God.  God is everywhere you trod.  Inside, outside, around and through — God is everything you do.

I am God and God is me — together God and I make WE.  This we is one, good heaven’s son, this we is one and can’t be undone.  I am God and God is me — together God and I make WE.

I realize just who I am, why I am God, oh Sam I am.  I am not separate — no I’m not.  The qualities of God are what I’ve got.  Love, Peace and Light are mine — no matter what, I know I’m fine.

Oh my, I’m grateful, yes I am.  I am God — not green eggs and ham.  Thanking God is what I do, especially for this chapel and crew.

I now do release my word — knowing that it has been heard.  I’ve put my thoughts into the law, so now I can unclench my jaw.  Therefore, I can release this biz — it shall be done and SO IT IS!

There is no spot where God is not

THE FIVE STEPS OF SCIENCE OF MIND TREATMENT

Treatment is the art, the act, and the science of consciously inducing thought within the Universal Subjectivity, for the purpose of demonstrating that we are surrounded by a Creative Medium which responds to us through a law of correspondence. In its more simple meaning, treatment is the time, process and method necessary to the changing of our thought. Treatment is clearing the thought of negation, of doubt and fear, and causing it to perceive the ever-presence of God.”

– Ernest Holmes

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL MIND TREATMENT (SMT)?

Treatment is a five-step process of affirmative and scientific prayer.  Treatment is a process and method used to realign our thought with our Truth.  Treatment is clearing the thought of negation, of doubt and fear, and causing it to perceive the Truth of the ever-presence of God or Spirit Indwelling that is never separate from us.

THE FIVE STEPS OF SCIENCE OF MIND TREATMENT

I. RECOGNITION (GOD IS) | Recognize God as the ultimate, limitless Presence and Power in the universe. God is all there is.

II. UNIFICATION (I AM) | After recognizing God as the ultimate Presence and Power in and through everything, you now accept that you and God are one. You know God acts through you, as you, in you, and in all life. I am one with God, now.

III. DECLARATION/REALIZATION (I ACCEPT; I AFFIRM) | Already knowing that you are part of God, you realize without doubt or reservation that the good you desire to experience is now taking form through God’s Power. I know my desire is complete and I accept.

IV. THANKSGIVING / ACCEPTANCE (I GIVE THANKS) | Having clearly stated and affirmed what you want to experience, you thankfully accept that the good you desire is yours right now. I accept and give thanks for this good right here and now.

V. RELEASE (I LET GO and LET GOD) | After thankfully accepting your good as already accomplished, you release your prayer to the activity of the Universal Law of Mind, completely freeing yourself of concern. I let go and let God. I release this truth in total belief that it is done.

At the end of every Spiritual Mind Treatment, we say the words “And so it is.” These words let us release our treatment out of our hands with total conviction that we BELIEVE and KNOW that what we desire is already done through the Power of God.

Introduction

Science of Mind is a great teaching that has been given to humanity. It provides a clear spiritual map which if followed diligently, leads to personal and planetary liberation.

As a philosophy, Science of Mind satisfies the intellect. It is reasonable and logical.  It gives a clear practical outline to use as a working basis for daily living.

As a science, Science of Mind is impersonal and systematic. Anyone can use the system who comes to it with focus and clarity. The results are predictable and repeatable.

As a religion, Science of Mind satisfies the heart. It proclaims the unity and oneness of all life.  Everything is interconnected to everything else. The basic principle is Omnipresence.  We learn to think according to the fundamental principle of unity.  We see the Presence of God everywhere and in all things including us.

As a spiritual practice, Science of Mind uses the tool of spiritual mind treatment. Spiritual mind treatment is defined by Dr. Ernest Holmes as “the act, the art, and the science of inducing thought into Mind. It is an art since there is feeling in it. It is an act since it is a moving thing in thought. It is a science since the movement of thought acts as Law”[1]

The key statement about treatment relates to purpose. Holmes says, The purpose of treatment is that the mind shall become aware of the gifts of the Spirit, shall accept them and specialize them in the experience of the individual life.” [2]

He does not say the purpose of treatment is to acquire things, to become wealthy or to find the perfect mate. The purpose is to allow us to become aware of the gifts of Spirit. What are the gifts of Spirit? The gifts are the first emanations of Spirit, which Troward calls the Properties of Spirit. Thomas Troward describes them as Life, Light, Love, Peace, Power, Beauty and Joy.[3]

Why do we want to become aware of these gifts? So we can accept them and specialize them uniquely and individually. In this one statement, Dr. Holmes gives us the secret to success, happiness, fulfillment and every other accomplishment. We are promised that as we embody and live from the gifts of Spirit, everything else shall be added unto us. We do not treat for things. We treat from consciousness. We treat from the consciousness of First Cause, from the awareness that these gifts are already ours. We do not look at the world of effect and say, “I want.” We treat from the world of cause and say. “I am and therefore, I have.”

Spiritual mind treatment accesses higher levels of consciousness. By using the steps of spiritual mind treatment, we are consciously and deliberately moving our everyday awareness from the realm of material effect to the realm of spiritual cause.

Steps of Traditional Treatment

Traditional Science of Mind teaches five steps of treatment.   The first step of treatment is called Recognition. Our ordinary conscious mind recognizes a higher realm of Universal Conscious Mind, a realm of unlimited awareness. By our very act of recognition, we are opening to a higher way of knowing and a greater way of seeing. This greater way may be called inspiration, intuition or insight.

We recognize. We recognize the Presence and the Power of Spirit. We affirm that the Universe is on purpose and creates everything out of Itself. We proclaim that God is in Its creation but is also transcendent to creation.

The second step of treatment is called Unification. Unification turns the theoretical idea of Higher Mind into practical reality. It is not enough to say, “God is all there is, we must also embody the truth that God is in me and I am immersed in God.” The Living Presence of Spirit is in us because It is us, individualized. When we realized we are immersed in It, we are transformed by the renewing of our mind.

In terms of our physical brain, it is known that human beings use only five to ten percent of their brain capacity. When we begin to recognize and unify with Higher Mind, the brain automatically increases its efficiency. It receives information in a higher and better way.

We unify. We unify our consciousness with this One Presence and this One Power. We turn away from outer conditions and affirm that the Mind of Spirit is our mind now.

The third step of treatment is called Realization. Our mind receives higher, loftier thoughts and accepts the true gifts of Spirit. We take these thoughts and gifts and formulate our creative word, our declaration of truth. The words we speak are not the result of ordinary human thinking, they are the result of higher inspiration, higher intuition. We receive the answer to our prayer as we are articulating the prayer. This is what the Bible means when it says, “Before they call I will answer.”

We realize. We know and speak our word of truth.

The fourth step of treatment is called Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving recognizes that gratitude provides additional power towards the manifestation of prayer. It’s like a booster. Thanksgiving is also the simple statement of gratitude from a grateful heart. We are blessed to have been given insight into the nature of the universe. We are blessed to know that we assert dominion and take total responsibility for our lives, by speaking our positive, creative words of truth.

We are thankful. We bless this treatment knowing it is being fulfilled by the Law.

The fifth step is Release.  We have great faith in the creative power of the Law of Mind, knowing it will transform our prayer into physical reality.  We return to our every-day conscious mind and let go and trust the Law of God to manifest the treatment. We have been inspired by Spirit; we have taken the inspiration and have formulated our word, our prayer, our mental equivalent. We have planted the seed of thought into subjective mind. And we release.

We release. We let go and let the creative power of universal subjective mind determine the outcome.

Argumentative Treatments and Realization

Dr. Holmes explains two methods of treatment. These two methods are called argumentative and realization.  The argumentative method is one wherein a series of mental arguments is used to erase a negative mental idea. In the method of realization no argument is used, but a state of consciousness is realized. The result is an instantaneous knowing of harmony and oneness.

Dr. Holmes states, “The argumentative method of treatment is a series of denials and affirmations for the purpose of building up, in the mind of the practitioner, a state of realization and acceptance.[4]

The best time to use argumentative treatment is during the second step of the treatment, as we are unifying with the Presence. We cannot be totally unified with the Presence and see the perfection in ourselves or our client unless we have dispelled the power of a relative condition. This is the purpose of argument. We argue with ourselves, using the principles of Science of Mind, until we are absolutely convinced of our unification with Spirit.

Here is an example of how a practitioner uses the argumentative method.

  1. God is all there is and God is good and I am created out of the goodness of God. Therefore, the goodness of God is within me. I am perfect, whole and complete.
  1. But I feel there is something wrong within me so I don’t feel perfect, whole and complete. I am experiencing a privation of good which is taking the form of some negative condition. The form may be disease, unhappiness, fear, loneliness etc.
  1. The negative condition appears real as a fact in my life but it cannot be the truth because I have already said that God is good and I am made out of the goodness of God.
  1. Since all conditions must be supported by some thought, there must be some kind of negative thought, belief or opinion supporting it.
  1. It doesn’t matter who or what is supporting the idea behind the condition or how many people believe it. These are simply opinions and concepts based on the mistaken ideas of the world and not ideas based upon the Truth.
  1. I do not believe the negative condition is a real thing. It may appear real but it cannot be supported by the goodness of God, nor stand the light of Truth.
  1. Everything that exists as a condition must have some thought behind it. No condition can exist unless it has some idea supporting it. But in this case, the idea supporting this condition can not come from God. Where the thought comes, I don’t know except it is a mistaken thought someone has accepted as true. It cannot be true because it is incompatible with any thought of goodness.
  1. Therefore, I affirm the opposite of this negative thought and affirm the truth about my being. The negative thought has nothing to support it and must be dispelled. Since any condition needs a thought to support it, even if the thought is negative, and since the negative thought is now gone, the negative condition also must disappear. It returns to the negative nothingness from which it arose.
  1. I affirm the Truth of my being and wholeness prevails because wholeness was there all the time.

Dr. Holmes states, “We all suffer from race consciousness and that what millions of people have believed in operates to some extent through all of us. But this does not make it so. The Practitioner must learn that much which appears to be true in experience is not true in Principle, and he must reverse the use of thought until the experience is transcended.” [5]

The argument is completed when we are convicted of the truth of Spirit. We may use the analogy of a court of law. During a trial, argument occurs on both sides of an issue. But there comes a time when argument is over, and it is time for the verdict. And, that verdict results in conviction. Once we are convicted, it is time to carry out the sentence. That is the “realization.” The sentence always follows the conviction. The relative world may argue with us and tell us that we are not spiritual beings. The relative world may tell us that we are subject to lack and limitation. We must argue from the basis that God is, and God is all there is. God is good. And God wants only health, prosperity, perfect right relationships, and creative self‑expression for us.

Now is the time for decision. And, as soon as we are convicted, we speak our word of truth. That is the sentence. We are sentenced to spiritual freedom. We are sentenced to prosperity. We are sentenced to perfect right relationships. We are sentenced to creative self‑expression. We are sentenced to health. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s start serving our sentence! And when we do, we receive a demonstration. What is a demonstration? A demonstration is a manifestation. We cannot demonstrate beyond our ability to mentally embody an idea. Everyone receives according to their belief. The universe will never deny us anything, if we ask believing.

Using the realization method, we do not argue. We simply know the Truth. We do not look at the condition and we do not consider the negative thought behind the condition. We know the Truth. We declare it and anything unlike the truth disappears.

Both types of treatment end in realization. The first method uses argument to get there and the second method goes directly to realization.

These five steps of treatment have been very successful in bringing health, prosperity, rich relationships and creative self-expression to individuals.  And if understood clearly and applied rigorously, these steps result in the prosperous and fulfilled life.

But there is another method of treatment, a method that insures that we are treating from the absolute reality of First Cause. We call it Absolute Treatment and it is the culmination of the ideas of Dr. Holmes. To understand how we arrive at the conclusions of Absolute Treatment, let us take some time to speak of the history of treatment and some of the major influences on the thinking of Dr. Holmes.

Healing Ideas From The Past

All truth passes through three stages:
First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.
 — Arthur Schopenhauer

When a thing is new, people say: ‘It is not true.’
Later, when its truth becomes obvious, they say: ‘It is not important.’
Finally, when its importance cannot be denied, they say:
‘Anyway, it is not new.’”
–William James

There are four main historical influences upon the Science of Mind theory of treatment. Each has revealed secrets of the process and each has led us to the place of Absolute Treatment.

I see myself as whole.

The first influence came from Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim 1493-1541- (also know as Paracelsus) and the first secret is: The Spirit of Wisdom heals me.

He said: “Only when the illusion of the separate self has disappeared from my heart and mind, and my consciousness rises to that state in which there is a total integration, the spirit of wisdom will perform its wonders through my instrumentality.”

I let the energy flow.

The second influence came from Franz Anton Mesmer-1734-1815- and the second secret is: Energy flows through me unimpeded.

He said: “There is a universal energy which is intended to flow through all creation. When it flows unimpeded, the individual experiences health.  When this universal energy is blocked, illness results.  It is the job of the healer to remove the blockage and reestablish the flow.”

I treat until I know.

The third influence came from Phineas Parkhurst Quimby1802-1866- and the third secret is:  I believe the Truth.

“The patient came to believe the condition was the result of his belief. It did not matter if this was true. The patient was given a new belief a true belief called ‘Inner Wisdom’ The mind cannot hold and believe two contradictory ideas at the same time. The patient can choose what he believes. The patient can choose the Truth.”

I release and I let go.

The fourth influence came from Thomas Troward- 1847-1016- and the fourth secret is: I am the higher mode of intelligence which heals.

Troward realized that what we call disease is a lower level life form attempting to survive. He said, “Everything that exists is a manifestation of intelligence but that the higher mode of intelligence can control the lower mode of intelligence if the higher mode chooses to do so.” Let us look at these influences in greater detail.

Paracelsus

Paracelsus is one of the best examples of a Renaissance man who embodied the “ageless wisdom” of the universe. He was a primary influence on Franz Anton Mesmer who was the initiating influence for Phineas Quimby.

Paracelsus was born in 1493, in a small village near Zurich.  His formal name was Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim. He learned the rudiments of medicine, surgery and alchemy from his father and entered the University of Basel at the age of sixteen. He took the name Paracelsus, which means “para-Celsus” (above or beyond Celsus), because he regarded himself as even greater than Celsus, the renowned 1st-century Roman physician.

He rejected traditional education and medicine. “The universities do not teach all things,” he wrote, “so a doctor must seek out old wives, gypsies, sorcerers, wandering tribes, old robbers, and such outlaws and take lessons from them.

He did not separate the spiritual from the material. His writings, which he dictated to his disciples, comprise most of what is known about the ancient Hermetic system of medicine. He saw everything as an emanation of Spirit.

He said, “True wisdom is not confined to books, or to any particular period of history, because the Eternal Wisdom is without a time, without a beginning and without an end. This wisdom comes only to those who sacrifice themselves in the spirit of wisdom. Those who seek truth for their own benefit and gratification will never find it. But the truth finds those in whom the delirium of “self” disappears, and wisdom becomes manifest in them.”

Paracelsus was a proponent of panpsychism.  He saw the entire universe as a living organism.  “There is nothing dead in Nature,” he affirmed. “Everything is organic and living, and therefore the world appears to be a living organism.” There is nothing corporeal which does not possess a soul hidden in it. There exists nothing in which is not a hidden principle of life.

This principle of life, he said, moves slowly in the mineral kingdom. In plants and animals it moves rapidly. But there is life in every form, from the lowest to the highest. He would have embraced the 13th century Sufi saying that “Consciousness sleeps in the rock, dreams in the plant, stirs in the animal and awakens in humanity.”

According to Paracelsus, our first task is to know ourselves.  “We must never for a moment separate ourselves from Great Nature, of which we are a copy and a part.  As we understand ourselves in the light of Nature then all wisdom is revealed to us.”

Paracelsus announced the doctrine of spiritual wholeness.  When we are integrated in spirit, mind and body, healing is automatic.  He taught a triple division of humanity.  The first division represents the physical body; the second refers to the indwelling, energizing nature — the life force.  The third division is the intelligence, the indwelling God, the Spirit, which is above the other two.

When these three divisions are held together in harmonious proportions, health is the result; their disharmony constitutes disease; their disruption spells death.

The physical body does not have life in itself. It is the vehicle through which life expresses.  Wisdom, reason and thought are not contained in the brain, but they belong to the invisible Spirit, which feels through the heart, and thinks by means of the brain. All these powers become manifest through the material organs.

“We are not a body but a heart and a spirit
And this spirit is an entire star, out of which, we are built.

If therefore we are perfect in our heart,

Nothing in the whole light of Nature shall be hidden from us.”

The whole purpose of life, according to Paracelsus, is to realize our inherent Godhood. There is no God, no saint and no power in which we can place any confidence for the purpose of our salvation, except the power of divine wisdom within ourselves. Only when we realize the Presence of God within ourselves will we begin our infinite life, and step from the realm of evanescent illusions into that of permanent truth. This realization can be attained in only one way — by the abandonment of the illusion of the separate self.

Paracelsus was the first physician to make use of the magnet and to explore the phenomenon of magnetism in relation to the human organism. On the basis of Hermetic principle of interrelationship he recognized the connection between psyche and the physical organism, and paved way for the work of Mesmer and subsequently Freud.

The character of Paracelsus has inspired several writers, among them Robert Browning, (1812-1889), who wrote:

Truth is within ourselves; It takes no rise

From outward things, whate’er you may believe.

There is an inmost center in us all,

Where truth abides in fullness. . .

And to know

Rather consists in opening out a way

Whence the imprisoned splendor may escape,

Than in effecting entry for a light

Supposed to be without”.

Franz Anton Mesmer

Mesmer was born in 1734, near Lake Constance, Switzerland.  His love of the writings of Paracelsus led him to take up medicine.

Mesmer believed that a kind of psychic ether pervades all space, and that the gravitational pull of the planets caused vibrations in this ether. He believed that this ether operating in individuals, when flowing naturally, results in normal healthy conditions throughout creation. Should the natural flow of this ether be impeded in any way, all sorts of sickness result. Healing consisted of finding blockages to the free flow of ether and dissolving them.

His first experiment occurred in July, 1774, when a woman came to him complaining of stomach cramps. He asked her to swallow a solution containing iron and affixed magnets to her stomach and legs. As a result the cramps quickly dissipated. Mesmer hypothesized that somehow the magnets were affecting the etheric fluid in her body. He called this process, “animal magnetism.”

He argued that the body was analogous to a magnet and that the fluid ebbed and flowed according to the laws of magnetic attraction. It was not necessary to use actual magnets.   A healer could possess a magnetic force of his consciousness which could affect the patient.

In 1777, an 18 year old, blind, female pianist, singer, and composer Maria-Theresa von Paradies, was brought to Mesmer. The girl had been blind since birth, but no physician had been able to find anything wrong with her eyes. After a series of treatments, she gradually regained her sight but for some reason lost the ability to play the piano.

Mesmer decided to escape Vienna and go to Paris where he was greeted as a medical miracle worker. By the 1780’s Mesmer had given up the use of magnets; but he had perfected his famous wooden tub, nearly five feet across, and one foot deep, filled with water and metallic fluids. Out of this tub projected iron rods that were held by the patients. Patients were massaged into a relaxed state by the tones of a glass harmonica played behind curtains covered with astrological symbols. (This simple musical instrument, invented by Ben Franklin) was played by touching the edge of the spinning glass with dampened fingers.) Then Mesmer himself, clad in a long purple robe, would enter and touch each patient with a white wand, sending them into a magnetic trance from which they awakened, fully cured.

In 1783 Mesmer founded the Order of Universal Harmony, ostensibly for instruction in animal magnetism, but secretly for teaching ancient healing practices. It was the vision of Mesmer to perfect the art of healing through the operation of animal magnetism and therefore   ”alleviate the sufferings of humanity.” He said, “Experience alone will scatter the clouds and shed light on this important truth: that Nature affords a universal means of healing and preserving mankind.”

In 1799 Mesmer published a small book where he explained his theory of healing.

  1. We are not individuals but individualizations of a universal force.

“Every person possesses an interior sense of wholeness which is connected with the whole of the universe. All people have an inner sight and an inner feeling which allows them to experience the harmony of the universe.  And when we come into the rapport with the whole, healing occurs. Since most people are unaware of this interior sense, the desire and the intention of the physician in awakening this inner experience are critical to the cure.”

  1. There is a universal energy which is intended to flow through all creation.

When it flows unimpeded, the individual experiences health.  When this universal energy is blocked, illness results.  It is the job of the healer to remove the blockage and reestablish the flow. When the flow of universal energy becomes blocked, it is necessary to introduce into the consciousness of the patient a powerful force field.  Mesmer called this field, “animal magnetism.”  He visualized this field of energy flowing from him into the patient.

He believed the nervous system was particularly responsive to a “subtle fluid” and that it was possible for the nervous system of the healer to work directly on the nervous system of the patient.  Because this subtle fluid was not subject to time and space, it was possible to “mesmerize” at a distance.

  1. The patient can heal himself.

Mesmer could teach the patient to access this “subtle fluid” and the patient would have the ability to look inside himself and obtain a healing. Mesmer writes, “Truth is nothing but a path traced between errors. The wasteland of error is far greater than the narrow path of Truth which runs through it, and mankind is forever wandering off into it.”

We can see in the healing philosophy of Mesmer, the introduction of psychic phenomena, communication from mind to mind, the beginnings of spiritual mind treatment, absent treatment and the mystical levels of mind.

The true practice of Mesmer was distorted by his followers and mesmerism became synonymous with hypnotism.  Mesmer never wanted to interfere with the free will or the conscious mind of his patient.  However, his technique often resulted in patients becoming subject to the conscious mind of another.  This has always been a danger in dealing with mental healing and is specifically discussed by Dr. Ernest Holmes in his Original Textbook under the subject of psychic phenomena.

Phineas Parkhurst Quimby

In 1838, a disciple of Mesmer, Charles Poyen, came to Belfast, Maine, to give a lecture on mesmerism. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby was in the audience, became fascinated and decided to learn mesmerism. Quimby followed Poyen from town to town learning both mesmerism and show business at the same time.

Quimby teamed up with Lucius Burkmar, a young man particularly susceptible to mesmeric trance, and took his own show on the road. Before small-town audiences Quimby would demonstrate his new science by putting Burkmar into a trance in which the young man would take clairvoyant journeys, read minds, and diagnose and prescribe treatment for illnesses. “Newspapers began to take note, and soon the magnetic doctor from Belfast was being touted as the world’s leading mesmerist.”

At some point, Quimby began to doubt that animal magnetism could account for the success in curing the sick. Through extensive experimentation with Burkmar, he decided that clairvoyant diagnosis and prescribed treatment had little to do with the patient’s recovery. Burkmar was not detecting the actual disorder, nor was his prescribed treatment the cause of the cure. He was, instead, reading the patient’s belief about his or her own physical condition.

The actual cure would come by believing that the remedy would cure, not by the remedy itself. Drawing out this insight, Quimby soon concluded that not only were the patients cured by correcting the errors in their beliefs or ideas, but that the errors in belief were the cause of the illness in the first place.

Quimby had a complete disdain for medical science of the day and that distain influenced his theory of disease. Today, the theory of spiritual mind healing is not so rigid, since there is great respect for modern medicine as a cooperating modality with spiritual mind treatment. Unlike most modern physicians, Quimby did not consider the mental roots of disease as just one among many possible sources. For Quimby, all physical maladies were the result of wrong belief, and there were no exceptions.

It is important that as we discuss spiritual mind treatment, we recognize there may be other reasons for disease than simply wrong belief. A modern theory of spiritual healing must be consistent with modern science since it is one of our foundational beliefs that science and spirituality are totally compatible.

For example, when asked why animals get sick, it was a common response of 19th century metaphysicians that the cause was the false thinking of humans picked up subconsciously by animals. But today, we know that dinosaurs got sick. From our inspection of fossils we know dinosaurs suffered from arthritis and other diseases. It would be hard to argue that the physical maladies of the dinosaurs were the result of “wrong belief, and there were no exceptions.”

Dr. Holmes took issue with the early metaphysicians who believed that negative conditions were illusion.

He said. “The Spiritual world in which we live is not a world of illusions. God’s world is not a world of illusion but one of divine realities. … Jesus did not say that things are illusions. He said that we must not judge from the standpoint of the seen but must judge righteously or with right judgment; and He meant that we must get behind the appearance and find out what caused it.” [6]

Holmes taught that everything is spiritual. Every condition that exists is the result of some vibration of energy. Science of Mind does not teach that disease is an illusion. It is a fact that exists based on a particular vibration of energy. The negative attitude of a patient may contribute to a lowering of the immune system, but the idea that a particular belief or core beliefs are the cause of a particular disease are both naive and simplistic.

Disease occurs because we allow a lower form of intelligence, a lower spiritual vibration to influence our bodies.

The dinosaurs couldn’t help it because they were unaware. But humans can become aware. We can make the conscious choice to live from higher spiritual vibrations. The question comes back to dominion.  This universe is based on awareness, perception and choice. Every day we get to choose whether or not to assert our spiritual authority.

Thomas Troward and Emergent Evolution

The modern theory of spiritual mind healing is best understood by examining the ideas of

Thomas Troward.

Troward and Holmes both accepted the idea of emergent evolution. Holmes spoke of emergent evolution in 1933 before he was aware of either Aurobindo or Teilhard de Chardin. He said, “The theory of emergent evolution reduced, to its simplest terms is this: That whenever our nature demands a new experience, there is that within this nature which projects the vehicle, making the experience possible.”

The unlimited possibility of Spirit is always ready to respond to new demands of nature. It is the nature of life to thrive and Spirit creates the outlets or channels whereby life flows into a greater expression of itself.

The dictionary definition of emergent evolution means the evolution of life that cannot be predicted from the study of less complex forms or a Darwinian view of resultant evolution. There is a power that is the cause of the evolution of physical life and Holmes called this power Consciousness or the influx of Spirit into creation, not that Spirit infused Itself into matter but that matter is Spirit vibrating at a lower level of energy. Spirit involves Itself and as a result of this involvement the material universe is created. But within the first creation of life at the cellular level is the divine urge to express more which results in the evolution of matter back to Spirit.

Science of Mind believes in emergent evolution, that the physical universe evolves as the result of the consciousness behind all life. This is quite different than the Eastern concept that views the world as illusion or the Darwinian view that evolution results in the mutation of form. In the Science of Mind view, the individual is consciously co-creating reality as the individual specializes the universal. Under the Eastern view, the individual is working out karma so that he will not have to be born again into a physical body and live again on the earth. Under the extension of the Darwinian view, aberrations occur in the genetic structure of certain species that allow that species to survive, thus evolution occurs by chance.

Troward believed in emergent evolution before there was such a term. He believed physical life forms were the outpicturing of expanding awareness. Life evolves by awareness or consciousness. At first, this awareness takes the form of “simple consciousness.” We see that life proceeds from the mineral kingdom, to the plant kingdom, to the animal kingdom. It proceeds generically and mechanically up to the point of the introduction of self conscious human.  Here the “personal factor” is introduced. The human is aware and is aware that he is aware. He has the ability to reflect upon his own existence.

Troward states, “Without the element of individual personality, Spirit can only work cosmically by a generic law. But this law admits a far higher specialization, and this specialization can only be attained through the introduction of the Personal Factor.”[7]

The Personal Factor leads to the decision of the self-conscious individual to participate consciously in the evolutionary process. Individuals discover or realize that they have the ability to control their thoughts and feelings and also the conditions of their lives. Through the Personal Factor, self-conscious individuals participate and further specialize the evolutionary process.

This specialization goes through various stages. We begin to realize we can change the outer conditions in our lives. Then we realize we can change our ideas about ourselves and our world. As we change our viewpoint, the outer world actually changes and we realize the connection between our inner attitudes and outer manifestation.

In relation to disease, we realize that disease in not an independent thing that invades our bodies but is the manifestation of a lower level of intelligence. And Troward says this, “the higher mode of intelligence can control the lower mode of intelligence if it chooses to do so.”

Under Troward’s theory, what we call disease is not an illusion but a lower life form. As a higher life form, humans have the ability to assert dominion over a lower life form. Under this theory, we are not discovering negative thought patterns and dissolving them but we are realizing spiritual dominion of a higher life form and as we do the lower form disappears or comes into harmony with the higher form.

We can choose to assert our dominion over all lower life forms including all forms of disease and by expanding our awareness, we are choosing to do so. We do it, not by abrogating science, but by cooperating with it.

There is nothing magical about spiritual mind healing. It is the logical extension of the realization of higher awareness and allowing that higher awareness to flow through us

Science of Mind believes in the complete compatibility of religion and science. That’s why it is “open at the top.” Each generation must be able to refine the theory of healing in light of new science.

Quimby said, “There is no intelligence, no power or action in matter itself, that the spiritual world to which our eyes are closed by ignorance or unbelief is the real world, that in it lie all the causes for every effect visible in the natural world, and that if this spiritual life can be revealed to us, in other words, if we can understand ourselves, we shall then have our happiness or misery in our own hands; and of course much of the suffering of the world will be done away with.”[8]

The basic theory has not changed. As practitioners we ask the patient to turn away for all forms of lower intelligence and turn to Truth. What is Truth? It is unity, it is oneness, it is the harmony of the universe. It is the goodness of God. Truth is embodied to the extent we directly experience the healing power of love or to the extent we have faith in it.

And so from these four major influences of spiritual mind treatment we repeat the

Four Secrets of Healing.

  1. I see myself as whole. The Spirit of Wisdom heals me.
  1. I let the energy flow. Energy flows through me unimpeded.
  1. I treat until I know. I believe the Truth.
  1. I release and I let go. I am the higher mode of intelligence which heals.

Introduction to Absolute Treatment

In studying the complete works of Ernest Holmes, I came upon a discussion of a more radical form of treatment called Absolute Treatment. In Absolute Treatment, we do not look for the negative thought behind a condition or the positive thought that creates a positive condition. We go directly to one or more of the Seven Properties of Spirit and treat from that knowing. We do not treat for something to happen. We treat from the consciousness of knowing. We treat from First Cause and First Cause alone.

As stated above, Troward speaks of meditating on the seven divine properties of Life, Light, Love, Peace, Power, Beauty and Joy.  Troward claims that the fastest way to God realization is to embody these properties by repeating them and saying, “These properties all are the nature of God and therefore are my nature.  I am the person that Thou art and Thou art the person that I am.”

When people treat for things, they often focus on the realm of effect rather than the realm of cause.  They began outlining how they would like to see their life, rather than treating from the Presence of Spirit and trusting Spirit to bring the perfect life to them.  They tend to focus on what they don’t want in their lives. Even in argumentative treatment there is a focus on a negative thought causing a negative condition. Troward did not believe in negative causation.

The secret of Absolute Treatment is to raise our consciousness to the spiritual domain of First Cause where we contact the original emanations of Spirit.

Two Domains Of Reality

There are two domains of reality. They are called physical reality and metaphysical reality.

Physical reality is the result of metaphysical reality. It is always effect and never cause. The characteristics of physical reality are subjectivity, density, impermanence and unpredictability. It is subjective because different people see it in different ways. It is dense because it is spiritual energy vibrating at levels we can see and experience. It is impermanent because it constantly changes based upon observation and interaction. It is unpredictable because the way it shows up is determined by an almost infinite number of perceptions which result in an almost unlimited interaction of energy waves. It is the external world of effect. It is the result of energy waves becoming energy particles and energy particles becoming physical matter.

Metaphysical reality is the realm of thoughts, beliefs, emotions and a combination of energy waves that we cannot see which nevertheless exist and have the potential to combine and manifest as physical reality. There are two aspects of metaphysical reality, the mental and the spiritual. The mental domain is the repository of all thoughts, emotions and beliefs. The spiritual domain is realm of Supreme Consciousness and the domain of the Seven Properties of Spirit.

Healing is revealing the presence of wholeness. All appearances of anything other than the manifestation of wholeness are the result error thinking, thinking based on reasoning from effect and not from cause.  Error thinking occurs when the conscious mind in the individual focuses upon a thought or idea which is not part of one of the Seven Properties of Spirit.

Error thinking demonstrates material objects in physical reality because the Creative Law of Mind always works but eventually error thinking cannot stand the Light of Truth and will crumble. Physical manifestation supported by spiritual truth can withstand the storms of the world. Physical manifestation supported by error thinking is supported by the ego and race consciousness and must disappear with expanded awareness and the rising above the average consciousness of the race. A house build on a foundation of sand looks great until the winds and the rain come.

We explain Absolute Treatment in four simple steps. These steps help raise our consciousness from the level of personality to the level of divine individuality. They ensure that we are allowing the complete flow of Spirit in our lives. Rather than pushing or trying to make something happen, these steps ensure we are treating from the consciousness of unity and wholeness. We treat from the consciousness of First Cause not from the consciousness of effect. We treat from the knowledge of Spirit, not from the desire to know. We treat from the awareness that we are already whole, not from the idea that we need to acquire something to make us whole. We go deeper and farther into the soul and spirit of the universe, the domain of real spiritual power. We discern the inner power of treatment.

The process of Absolute Treatment brings our minds into harmony with the Seven Spiritual Properties. Absolute Treatment is a declaration and realization of one or more of these properties which out-picture as health, harmony and wholeness for any and all situations in our lives.  Anyone who has a deep and abiding faith in the Presence and Power of God can successfully master Absolute Treatment to heal any condition in life provided the treatment is done precisely, scientifically and impersonally.

Absolute Treatment does not treat for things.  It treats from the place of pure awareness.  It does not treat for the elimination of conditions, the creation of conditions, the physical body or the personality of anyone.  It reaffirms the Divine Properties inherent in every person.

Absolute treatment speaks words of being and not words of having. Words of being are words that grow awareness. We describe the properties of an unlimited being. Once being is established, the having comes automatically. The most powerful statement of being is, “I am”. By proclaiming, “I am” we are proclaiming our essence, our unique individuality, our universal birthright. We establish the consciousness of being by the complete embodiment of the Seven Properties of Spirit.

We do not acquire the power of the universe.  We already have it.  We only need to reveal it within us.  We commune.  We go within.  We quiet our mind.  We relax and let the power come through us.  We don’t make anything happen.  We speak words of First Cause and allow them to be fulfilled through us. Here is the place where our words are filled with the spiritual power and energy of the universe. We complete the journey of conscious union. And we allow the majesty of primal energy to fill our words.

If we completely embody the nature of our being, we are never sick, we never worry about the future, and we live a happy and prosperous life in the present moment. To arrive at a consciousness of being, we must know who we are. To know who we are, we embody our real identity through the Seven Properties of Spirit.

Here are the four simple steps of Absolute Treatment.

Step One. I am whole.  I am whole when I know:

God Is and God Is All There Is.  God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. God creates the entire universe and everything in it out of Its Essence. Everything is made of the Essence of God. This means that all life including every person is created out of the Essence of God.

God Is Good. Everything and everyone in the universe flows in the goodness and harmony of God. If the Essence of God is goodness, that goodness manifests in all life. Anything unlike the Goodness of God has no reality in Truth.

I am That. Because we are made out of the Essence of God, the Goodness of God and the Properties of Spirit are within each of us. We are in divine partnership with the Creative Presence of the universe. With God alone, there is pure potential, with the individual alone there are only the limitations of mortal mind, but the individual and God united and merged together as one, are the greatest power in the universe. God’s job is to provide us with the inspiration and energy of Spirit. Our job is to specialize that energy in our life.

Step Two. I open to the flow. We let the energy flow when we totally open to the energy of Universal Spirit .

We unify our awareness with Spirit and totally immerse our individuality in Supreme Consciousness. The Law of Reciprocity means the universe responds to us according to our consciousness. We surrender to the Law of Reciprocity knowing the more we open to Universal Spirit the more we receive and the more individualistic we  become.

Step Three. I treat until I know.

We realize the Truth. We affirm the Divine Properties of God and realize that these properties are our properties now. They are Life, Light, Love, Peace, Power, Beauty and Joy. We specifically state:

I am life. I live my life with grace and enthusiasm. I am life and as life I do flow.

I am joy.  I live the joyful life.  I am liberated. I am free. I am joy, above and below.

I am power.  I am a powerful spiritual being.  I use my power to bring goodness to the world. I am power so I can let go.

I am love and I am loving. I am love; I reap what I sow.

I am beauty.  Everything I touch becomes more beautiful.  My life is beautiful. I am beauty, I watch myself grow.

I am peace.  I achieve inner harmony. I balance the knowledge of my head with the love of my heart. I am peace, I know that I know.

I am light and allow my light to shine forth in its full splendor. I am light, I eternally glow.

Everything in the material world is a combination of these properties fully functioning. There can be nothing other than these properties acting as First Cause, so we focus on them. Anything unlike these properties dissipates and disappears.

I am life and as life I do flow.

I am joy, above and below.

I am power so I can let go.

I am love; I reap what I sow.

I am beauty, I watch myself grow.

I am peace, I know that I know.

I am light, I eternally glow. I am light, I eternally glow.

Step Four. I release and I let go.

We let go and let God determine through the impersonal Law how the result is to come about.  We let Spirit handle the details. The creation, the mental equivalent, is in Mind. Now we get out of the way and let the treatment unfold. This doesn’t mean we become passive and do nothing.  We act, but our actions are the result of the unfoldment of our creative word.

We have done our spiritual work.  We have centered ourselves in spiritual power.  We have declared in clear, specific terms the fundamental spiritual properties of the universe.  We have gone through the process of embodying those properties.  Now we let go and let God bring the result.

Notice the difference between what has been called Argumentative Treatment and our four step Absolute Treatment. In augmentative treatment we focus on the negative condition and the negative causation and through a logical process show how the negative cannot be true. In absolute treatment, our mind immediately turns to spiritual cause. We don’t care about the nature of the condition or who labeled it or what might be the cause behind it. All of this is irrelevant speculation. It is the world of opinion. There is only God. There is only goodness and when we know this from the level of our soul, the result is goodness in every aspect of our lives.

Affirmation: I embody the Seven Properties of a spiritual being.

Why We Experience Negativity

That which is perfect cannot make anything imperfect. Then why do negative conditions exist in the physical world.  Let us approach this enigma head-on. Because God is perfect, God cannot conceive of anything less than perfect. Therefore, you and I as human beings are perfect. It does not matter whether we are seen as projections, emanations, manifestations, reflections, or simply parts of God. That which is perfect cannot make anything imperfect. Then why do we appear to suffer? Why do we appear to get sick? Why do we appear to have pain and die? Why does there appear to be evil in the world?

Suffering is not from God but occurs because of our misuse or ignorance of our creative abilities.  We are spontaneous, free-choosing individuals, and we are subject to the consequences of our individual choice. God cannot compel us to make perfect choices. We make better choices as we become more aware.

The human being is inherently a perfect idea, but because we are individuals, our relative thoughts can block this perfect idea. We have been given the power to reason and the power to choose. We can choose to reason from what we see in the physical world or we can choose to rely on First Cause.

The blueprint of life is perfect, but in order to be free and spontaneous individuals we must discover that perfect life for ourselves. Because we are free to imagine, we can imagine ideas and thoughts that are less than perfect. The subconscious mind records everything we think. When our thinking is based on the relative world only, then limited thoughts and imperfect thoughts are recorded in subconscious mind.

Dr. Holmes states, “Healing is accomplished by uncovering, neutralizing, and erasing false images of thought, and letting the perfect idea or blueprint reflect itself through subjective mind into the body.”[9]

The physical body is an effect.  When sickness appears in the body, it must be the result of some disharmony in mind. Therefore, sickness is a distortion of a mental process.  All manifestations which are called disease begin in mind and can only be cured in mind by knowing the Truth.

We are spiritual beings living in a spiritual universe governed by spiritual law.  If the outer body and our affairs do not bear witness to this fact, it is due to our reliance of the facts in the physical world, our own lack of awareness and the mistaken basis from which we make our decisions.

Since everything is Mind, the primary instrument of Mind is thought. Permanent healing can take place only by right thinking or right contemplation. As thought reaches into higher realms of consciousness, a greater degree of awareness and thus a greater degree of healing takes place.

Evil Is Ignorance

Evil was defined by the famous German writer, Goethe as “obstinate ignorance.” Throughout human history, human beings have refused to take responsibility for their own actions. They have created a duality of good and evil by projecting undesirable elements of themselves. This perverse doctrine of external evil has kept humanity in bondage and continues to cause great suffering and death on our planet.

There is no “good and evil” in a universal sense.  We have invented it in our own minds by separating ourselves from our Spiritual Source. Evil is not an innate force.  It appears to exist on the relative plane, but actually functions only when there is a lack of awareness in our consciousness.  Things that we call “bad” happen to us when we remove our consciousness from the reality of God.

Are there evil people in the world? There are many people who do evil, hurtful things because they function at very low levels of awareness based on fear. When we separate ourselves from our spiritual nature, we separate ourselves from God. But all people have God buried inside of them somewhere.  No one remains permanently lost or disconnected from God.  As each of us make a commitment to raise our consciousness through love and understanding, we help raise the consciousness of others until the time comes when evil and negative conditions are eradicated from the Earth.

We affirm in our hearts that the physical universe and humanity have never been separated from God but are created directly from the Essence of God.  Therefore, the Essence of God is in creation and is in humanity.  The universe is good because it is filled with the Holy Essence of Spirit. The only sin is a mistake based on ignorance and the failure to understand the interconnectedness of all life.

The Essence of God is within humanity and humanity is within God. The Earth, the planets, the animals and all its people are holy and sacred expressions of God. Humans are “emanations” of God who, through the process of the evolution of consciousness will come into the full realization of their God nature.

We declare the unity and interconnectedness of the universe.  There may be evil in the world but it is the result of ignorance and the failure of humans to realize their spiritual nature.  There are acts of evil but there is no innate evil.

It is true that “bad things” happen to people but only because people exercise free will without full understanding. A theological system based on duality and sin perpetuates evil because it tends to keep humanity in ignorance.

We assert that time is cyclical, spiral, and not linear.  From the beginning of this creative cycle, life continues to evolve into greater and greater degrees of livingness. There are no end times; there are simply transformational shifts into new levels of awareness.  Because the universe is based upon love, there can be no judgment, except the consequences of the impersonal law of cause and effect.

Every person, without exception, is the “only begotten of God” because the Essence of God is within all.  All people are coming into the realization of their divine essence because this pattern of perfection is latent within all. And as each of us comes into the conscious realization of our own divinity, we will accept our birthright of health, wholeness, abundance and loving relationships. All thoughts of duality and evil will be obliterated from our minds forever.

Step One: I Am Whole

The first step of Absolute Treatment is “I am whole”.  As we declare wholeness, we make three proclamations of truth, 1. God Is and God Is All There Is. 2. God Is Good. 3. I am That.

God Is and God Is All There Is

Consciousness is the medium of God. As water is the medium for the fish to swim and air is the medium for birds to fly, consciousness is the medium in which we live, move and have our being. But unlike the fish that can be removed from the water and the birds that can be taken from the sky, it is impossible to remove us from consciousness because consciousness is within us as the life principle.

Everything is consciousness. Consciousness is all-pervasive. It is in everything and is everywhere. Our individual consciousness exists within and is a part of the universal consciousness. We may call this universal consciousness God, The Higher Power, Universal Essence, Tao or Supreme Consciousness. It cannot be named. It is and is all there is. It is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. Everything that is, comes from It.

Energy is consciousness. Consciousness is intelligent and purposeful energy. Everything is energy. Einstein proved that energy and mass are equal, identical and interchangeable. Quantum physics has shown us that matter is simply a vibratory rate of energy. Matter is not solid but exists as energy bundles. When we perceive these energy bundles, they become real to us.  The entire universe is made up of one fundamental energy which vibrates at different rates and is continually interacting with itself in the form of energy waves. The way that these energy waves interact determines the nature and form of what we see and experience. Inherent within the properties of this energy is the urge to create, to make something out of itself. The essence of this energy is Love. Higher vibrations of energy consist of thoughts and emotions and lower vibrations consist of form and the material world. This energy is the fundamental substance of the universe.

We live inside the energy of the universe and therefore interact with it. We can interact consciously with specificity, purpose and intention or we can interact unconsciously.  Because we are continuously immersed in this energy it is impossible not to interact and create with it.  The fundamental energy of the universe has innate wisdom within it. This wisdom is called Supreme Consciousness. It is the name for the Intelligence that creates everything out of Itself.

Individual wisdom is Supreme Consciousness individualizing Itself in every human. Every person has the ability to live from the basis of Supreme Consciousness. The name for this consciousness in the individual is inner wisdom. It is also called essence or soul nature. Because this wisdom is within us, we can learn to commune with It and create the life we desire. As we become aware of this tremendous potential, we move out of victim consciousness. We discover there is a correlation between the way we think and the reality we experience.

God Is Good

There is no duality in goodness.  Goodness does not presuppose its opposite.  Goodness means that the universe is life-affirming and is created in such a way that supports the fulfillment of potential.  Aristotle said, “The true nature of anything is the highest it can become.” Evil is not something that exists as a counterpart of good. The appearance of evil exists because of ignorance.

Some religions teach that God has a specific will or destiny for each of us.  Science of Mind teaches there is no specific will of God for us. We create our own destiny through our own choices. But there is a generic flow in the universe for goodness and love.  Therefore, it is the will of God that we live up to our full potential.  Spirit desires us to be fulfilled in every way. This happens automatically as we embody the Seven Properties of Spirit and realize Supreme Consciousness.

Goodness results in perfect health because health is harmonious and naturally flows. Goodness results in prosperity because prosperity is the unlimited flow of abundant substance. Goodness results in loving relationships because expressed goodness attracts others who love.  Goodness results in creative self-expression because it awakens the deep desire to create in every individual.

There is no goodness in death because the goodness of God is ageless, birthless, deathless and eternal. There is no goodness in disease because what we call disease is simply the absence of health. There is no goodness in poverty because it is only the absence of wealth. There is no goodness in darkness because it is only the absence of light.  There is no goodness in any form of negativity because it is the opposite of life.

I am That

We are spiritual beings living in a spiritual universe.  Every dimension of this universe emanates from One Source. There is no separation between the Source and the manifest levels of the source. The same essence of Spirit is in the earth, the plants, the animals and all sentient beings. The energy of God fills the whole universe. From the beginning and even before the beginning, there is the Mind of God. There is nothing outside this Mind. It permeates all things.  God’s Essence is everywhere.

The universe is spiritual energy.  This energy is intelligent.  It has two aspects.  The first aspect is pure, undifferentiated, and unmanifest.  It simply is, but is not something. This Isness has various names.  In quantum physics is it called the Unified Field.  In philosophy, it is called the “Unmoved Mover.” Whatever we choose to call it, it is intelligent energy.

The second aspect of this pure spiritual energy is its tendency to manifest into form or Its creativity.  No one knows exactly how this tendency works.  We do not know how pure undifferentiated energy takes form, so we use analogies to explain it.  For example, we call Spirit, the Thinker and we say Spirit, thinks a thought and that somehow through this creativity, the thought becomes a thing. This leads us to the third aspect of spiritual energy or form.

Thus, we have three aspects of universal consciousness: 1) Spirit, God unmanifest; 2) Law, the operation of Spirit creating form out of Itself through some interaction on Itself; and; 3) Body, the resultant form.  Although there are three aspects of the one energy, there is only One Energy out of which everything manifests.

We are made in the image and likeness of God. We represent God in microcosm. The Properties of God are the Properties within us.

Because God is a trinity of Spirit, Mind and Body, we are a trinity. We have a conscious mind, a subconscious mind and a physical body. The function of our conscious mind is to unify with Supreme Consciousness, receive inspiration and declare vital and positive thoughts to be received by our subconscious mind.

Our subconscious mind has two functions. It is a creative medium. It accepts the conclusions of our conscious mind as final.  It accepts whatever ideas it is given as true and then acts upon those ideas to bring them into physical reality. The second function of our subconscious mind is a storehouse. It stores all the thoughts, emotions and beliefs it has received. Many people live mechanical and predictable lives because they choose only ideas that have been stored in the subconscious mind. When we wake up, we consciously entertain new ideas and are open to the inspirations of Supreme Consciousness.

Our subconscious mind is the greatest power known to humanity because it is the creative aspect of Supreme Consciousness, the Source of all power. If we allow our subconscious to control our life, we become its slave. It runs on auto pilot. If we learn to direct it, it becomes our servant.

Faith is the Prerequisite

Real recognition can only come through faith. We state our proclamations of truth and use absolute logic to become convicted. Faith is the spiritual conviction within us that Spirit is intelligent, on purpose and supports us at all times.  We develop a deep inner faith and conviction that God is the Source, the Power and the Sustainer of everything in creation. The true state of affairs in the universe is one of wholeness. To recognize and affirm the unseen world of Spirit requires complete faith.

There are relative facts and there is faith. The relative fact is that we all die, but faith reveals God’s promise that we are immortal souls, there is no death, only the continuing rebirth of the soul. The relative fact is there is war in this world, but faith reveals Gods promise of peace when “nations shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks, nations shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Micah 4:3)

The relative facts are there is greed, selfishness and lack of respect for human life in the world, but faith reveals God’s promise of “a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away” and “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with the people and God will dwell with them and they shall be the people of God and God shall be with them and be their God.” (Rev. 21:1‑3)

Faith is knowing that the transcendent God and the immanent God are One God.

Treatment is the method which allows us to open ourselves to that which is greater than the human intelligence. We call this something greater, “Divine Mind.” Most people say, “I will believe it when I see it.”  Faith tells us,” We will experience it when we truly believe it.” It is necessary to have a deep and abiding faith in God, before we can experience Its Presence. The great Catholic saint, St. Anselm, said it this way, “I believe that I may know.” We cannot come to the experience of God by reason. We must come by faith.

Faith explains why some prayers appear to be answered, and others do not. Without faith, we cannot successfully align and open our minds to the power of Universal Spirit. When we say the Lord’s Prayer, we say, “Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” The will of God is to bring greater goodness into our life and to use us as a conduit to help bring peace on earth. In order for this to occur, we must take the first step towards God.  We must believe and open ourselves to this Universal Presence. Then, God will take a thousand steps towards us. Faith is a creative power that opens us to a new dimension of Spirit. We ask in faith. Here is the secret. In order to receive, we must believe we already have, even before we receive.  We be it; we know it, we accept it in mind and then we see it in the physical world.

There are four steps of faith building.  They are:

  1. Awareness. We become aware there is a different way to think. We are continually open and receptive to new ideas.
  1. Understanding. We put in the time and effort so that the new ideas are clear to us, so we conceptually understand this new way of thinking.
  1. Believing. We consciously choose to believe in a new way. We say yes. Believing is a process, a day-by-day workout, not just with our minds, but with our emotions and with our actions. It sounds right, it feels right, and it flows right.
  1. Faith. Moving through the process of believing, testing, reassessing, a deep awareness begins to develop. Our consciousness shifts to a place of pure knowing. Our entire mind accepts this new way of thinking, a new way of being. There is nothing to oppose it, deny it, or contradict it in any way.  We have been transformed by the renewing of our mind.

We always have a choice. We can live by fear or we can live by faith. Externally, we know the Universe supports our physical survival. Photosynthesis in plants and plankton in the ocean produce the oxygen we need to breathe. If we violate the laws of the earth by polluting the ocean or destroying our plant life, we endanger our physical survival.

Internally, the Universe supports us spiritually. The internal equivalent to oxygen is love. Just as the relationship between the sun and the plants produce oxygen, the relationship between God and humanity produce love. When we block our relationship with God, we threaten our internal survival. Faith opens the internal channel. It is the bridge from our humanity to our divinity. It is God’s Law that we love one another. As the combination of oxygen and the sun causes the plants to thrive, love and light causes each of us to prosper.

Step Two: I Open to The Flow

The second step of Absolute Treatment is “I open to the flow”. We recognize the reciprocal relationship between the Universal and the individual and open to the flow of the Universal allowing Its energy to flow through us.

We unify our awareness with Universal Spirit and totally immerse our individuality in Supreme Consciousness. We realize the Truth. We affirm the Divine Properties of God and realize that these properties are our properties now. They are Life, Light, Love, Peace, Power, Beauty and Joy. Everything in the material world is a combination of these properties fully functioning. There can be nothing other than these properties acting as First Cause, so we focus on them. Anything unlike these properties dissipates and disappears.

An Absolute Practitioner is charged to treat from First Cause, that which is perfect, whole and complete. We avoid the trap of treating from secondary causation or from effect.  We see ourselves as unlimited, eternal spiritual beings living in the physical world time and space.

If we appear to be suffering from some relative condition, it can have no basis in Reality. It is impossible for a negative condition to be the product of a Divine Property.  We do not concern ourselves with the mental cause of negative conditions.  We simply focus on the truth of the Divine Properties.  When the light shines, the darkness does not comprehend it.  There is no reality in darkness; it is simply the absence of light.  Therefore, all we need do is proclaim and embody the positive Properties of Spirit and the negative condition disappears; it must disappear because there is nothing in Reality to support it.

The Property of Life

The presence of Life is the energy that heals all. The entire universe is alive. Life is the term used for the different degrees of livingness. Rocks have livingness; plants have livingness. Animals have a greater livingness. Humans have self-conscious livingness. There is a higher level of livingness called cosmic consciousness. It has been said, “The universe sleeps in the mineral kingdom, breathes in the vegetable kingdom, moves in the animal kingdom, awakens in the human kingdom and fully lives in the kingdom of cosmic consciousness.

Disease and death appear when the energy of livingness is blocked or depleted. It is similar to water running through a hose. We can block the flow by stepping on the hose. Negative thinking and speech are like stepping on the hose of life. The solution is to get off the hose and let it flow.

The air we breathe is more than oxygen and chemicals.  It is the energy of Life that animates us.  The energy of Life brings harmony to our bodies, our minds and our souls. The energy of life connects all sentient beings with other living creatures and the Earth itself.  We feel rejuvenated with a sense of balance and harmony and an inter‑connection with all life.

Life is a universal energy that moves through our body and creates perfect circulation, perfect assimilation and perfect elimination. Our bodies are made to be the perfect distributors of Life Energy.

We reconnect with the flow of Life through communion. We “feel the Earth and commune with it like a lover. We feel the interconnectedness of all life, the oceans, the rocks, the trees, the plants, the rain forests, the animals and all humanity.   We see our planet as a holy and sacred place. The essence of Life fills our entire being with its energy. We are open. We are receptive. We radiate life energy now. The entire universe is alive with the Presence of God.

Dr. Holmes states, “Life is the animating principle of being. It has an outer activity which we call form and an inner activity which we call thought. In moments of deepest realization, the great mystics have sensed that One Life flows through ALL; and that all are some part of that Life. They have also seen Substance, a fine, white, brilliant Stuff, forever falling into everything; a Substance indestructible and eternal.”[10]

All creation is immersed in life from the smallest particle to largest galaxies, from the first mineral to the self-conscious human to the beings of cosmic awareness. Life is the activity of God.

The Property of Light

Light shines at different levels of brightness, different intensities. The Light of illumination is the white Light of Truth, the Light of all lights.

Light is the power of spiritual awareness and represents freedom, liberation and transformation.  Our bodies are meant to be illuminated until they become transparent. Light helps integrate all of the energies of Spirit, filling them with spiritual power and purpose, illuminating them and allowing us to reveal our full magnificence as both human and spiritual beings.

Where Life is the primary property to heal the body, Light is the primary property to heal the mind and Spirit through the process of illumination.

Light is a luminous presence which eliminates all darkness. There is light we can see with the human eye. We call this physical light. There is the inner or spiritual light that we can see only with the mind. This is the divine light of wisdom and intuition.

Dr. Holmes states, “There is such a light at the center of everything and you might see it everywhere in all things. There is a light at the center of everyone, this light is never obliterated, it can only be obscured. There is a light in every organ of the physical body. If any organ would be restored to the vibration of that light, it would become healed, because that light is the pattern of that thing.”[11]

The Property of Love

Love is the positive energy that creates and sustains the universe. It is the glue that holds all particles together. Love heals all things because it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things and sees the unity in all things. Love is the self-livingness of the Spirit through the desire of Life to express Itself. Love is a cosmic force whose sweep is irresistible.

We are filled with the energy of love.  We open our hearts to all people with deep compassion because love is our nature.

Dr Holmes states, “Love is referred to as the Great Alchemist, since where Love is, manifest, harmony and right action follow. The vibratory forces of the body are lifted and changed into higher and finer rates of vibration. This is the basis for the panacea of the Elixir of Life, which is eternal youth, so long sought for.”[12]

The Property of Peace

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. Peace is the undisturbed harmony at the center of every person. With peace comes serenity, deep tranquility and perfect calm. As we become peaceful, our peace radiates out, touches others, and touches the world. World peace begins one person at a time.

Dr. Holmes tells us, “Within every person the divine pattern of perfect peace is already implanted. Peace and freedom come to our planet when we fully realize the truth of our being. A new science, a new religion, and a new philosophy of peace are rapidly being developed. This is in line with the evolution of the great Presence, and nothing can hinder its progress.”[13]

The Property of Power

The righteous use of Power brings focus, determination, action, strength, courage and will.  Integrated power is the proper blending of masculine and feminine energies.  We develop the power of giving and the power of receiving.

All living energy systems require a continual flow of energy to maintain dynamic stability and growth.  We open to the power of the universe by maintaining an attitude of awe and wonder.  We are receptive.  Power allows us to develop focus, will, discipline and determination.  Power grounds us with the properties of decisiveness and assertiveness which are essential to the achievement of our dreams.

Dr Holmes states, “We recognize that within ourselves is the Power to produce success or failure. Knowing this, we can no longer blame others for our troubles. Fear brings failure; faith brings success. It’s just that simple.”[14]

The Property of Beauty

Beauty is the result of the innate harmony of the universe.  Unity in action represents the highest of creative self-expression.  Beauty is the music and art of the universe.  Beauty is the dynamic unfoldment of the creative process.

The essence of God is everywhere; therefore, the essence of God is here now. God is everywhere, therefore God is here now. The beauty of God is everywhere; therefore, the results of harmony, health, prosperity, love, and creativity are here now. Health is a spiritual reality.  It is the result of the harmonious flow of the individual with life.

Beauty is the natural result of the combination of peace and harmony.  We begin with harmony because harmony is the natural state of being upon it rest the principle of mathematics, the principle of music and the principle of healing. Ideas that are harmonious heal.

Dr. Holmes states, “Spirit does not reconcile, It transmutes. Treatment transmutes the incomplete things of the past into things of beauty. No treatment is a good treatment unless its thought is, “Thy will be done” and … we know God’s will is peace, happiness, abundance, love, life, truth and beauty, ever thing that is excellent, nothing that limits or hurts.[15]

The Property of Joy

Joy begins with passion, and passion is the beginning of enthusiasm, a zest for life.  Without passion there can be no true living.  People in the world today are afraid of passion.  They’re afraid of becoming over emotional, of losing control.  There is too much emphasis on logic and objectivity.  We know by now, because everything is related to everything else and because everything affects everything else, there is no such thing as objectivity.  An observer cannot detach himself from his observation.  Yet, people continue to try.  It’s because they desperately want control, but control is an illusion. It is not control we seek but flow. With flow we live in joy.

Energy is like a river.  It must flow.  It must seek its positive outlet.  When the experience of Joy is blocked, energy inverts.  It turns in upon itself, and manifests as frustration, rage and even violence. The manifestation of negative emotions including anger and fear are the result of the suppression of the creative energy of joy.  We are like a pressure cooker.  We are meant to receive the positive energy of Joy but we must give it a creative outlet or it blows up.

The true feeling of Joy, properly channeled, results in creative self-expression. As we surrender to the universal energy of joy, we become more receptive to its creative power.  We dare to be vulnerable. We’re willing to take the risks of intimacy. When we allow true joy to come into our lives, we can overcome any fear and act with spiritual courage.  To embody the Property of Joy means to be carefree.  We can never be free unless we’re carefree. Joy is real. It is the aliveness of life.

Dr. Holmes states, “Spiritual mind treatment  … is the spontaneous proclamation of joy from a jubilant and a beholding soul.”[16]

Step Three: I Treat Until I Know

While all the steps are important, the third step is the most important, because it is the step of the embodiment. This is what Dr. Holmes means by the word “realization”. We completely and totally realize the truth of our words. We not only understand and believe the treatment with our conscious mind, but the treatment is subconsciously embodied. A totally embodied treatment must manifest.

Put simply, we believe that everything that exists in the universe emanates from one single Source. We believe there are seven foundational spiritual properties of this One Source. We believe if we embody these properties so that we are living from them every day, we live a life of happiness, harmony and fulfillment.

Living from the Seven Spiritual Properties of Life, Light, Love, Peace, Power, Beauty and Joy, we live up to our full potential as spiritual beings having in a world of time and space.

Below are seven treatments based upon the Seven Properties of Universal Spirit. Read them over and study them until you feel the essence of the treatment. You may choose to rewrite the treatment in your own words. Dr. Holmes tells us that if we want to take complete ownership of an idea, we need to read it over until we totally understand it and then rewrite it in our own words.

 Treatment for Life

I recognize the Life of God and unify my consciousness with that Life. I exist for the purpose of expressing Infinite Life in a unique and beautiful way.  I receive all of the energies of universal Life and allow those energies to move through my body, my mind and my affairs.  I am committed to avoid all negative thinking and any activity that blocks the full and complete flow of life energy. I feel rejuvenated with a sense of balance and harmony and an inter‑connection with all life.

Life is a universal energy that moves through my body and creates perfect circulation, perfect assimilation and perfect elimination. My body is made to be the perfect distributor of Life Energy.

I am the Life of God and as I totally embody this life, I live in total health, harmony and prosperity. I believe in my own soul, my own spirit, and my own destiny; for I understand that my life is the Life of God. I am the Life of God now and always.

A Treatment for Light

I recognize the Presence and Power of Universal Spirit within my mind, my body and all my affairs.  My consciousness is unified with the consciousness of All-Originating Universal Spirit.  The emanation of Light illuminates, reveals and heals every fiber of my being,

The direct experience of this Light permeates my body, my emotions, my mind and my affairs.  As I open to the universal light energy of Spirit and it streams into me, as me and through me.

Light touches me at the cellular level, healing and making whole every atom and molecule of my body.  Light moves through my mind and clarifies my thinking. Light moves through my body and illuminates my life energies. Light moves through my emotions, balancing and harmonizing my feeling response. Light awakens me to my spiritual magnificence and unifies me with the earth and all people of the earth.

I am the White Light of Truth, the Light of all lights. This Light brings me greater spiritual awareness. This Light brings me freedom, liberation and transformation. Let there be light illuminating all aspects of my life. My essence is Light

A Treatment for Love

I am the consciousness of Love. I love and respect all people I meet and I know they love and respect me.  I never speculate on how others see me.  I know I am always treated with love and respect, and I treat others the same way.

I live from the principle of unconditional love.  Anything in the past that has hindered my love is now released. I let go of all past judgment.  I am unconditionally loving and nonjudgmental now. I have forgiven myself and any others who I perceive have harmed me in any way.  I know that my essence can never be harmed.  I am an invincible, immortal soul. Therefore, I am in love with every person I meet, I am in love with God, I am in love with life, and I am in love with myself. I am a free, loving spiritual being. My life, my body and my affairs are now completely and totally healed by the magnificent power of Divine Love.

A Treatment for Peace

My mind is peaceful, my thoughts are peaceful, my life is peaceful. Peace is my nature. I am the stability at the very center of my being. At this center nothing can disturb me. I am totally calm. I am serene. I am immersed in my perfect peace.

I am the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. I feel that peace filling me now. The Lord leads me beside the still waters of perfect peace. I feel the serenity, deep tranquility, and perfect calm. The center of my life is peace. And as I become peaceful, my peace radiates out, touches others and touches the world. I am peace.

A Treatment for Power

As I recognize the Spiritual Property of Power within me, I am filled with clarity and decisiveness.  I act from a clear space of right action.  Power gives me the courage, will and determination to follow through with my intentions and goals.  As I consciously and creatively direct my power, I know my success is guaranteed.

Power gives me dominion and authority over my life. From the very beginning, I have been commanded to take dominion and I choose to do so now.

I have fortitude. I have courage to meet every situation. I have persistence. I am disciplined and responsible. As I align with Power, my thoughts have power, my words have power, my deeds have power. I think, speak and act from the center of Power. I create a wonderful, abundant and prosperous life. I claim it today, because I am the Power of God now.

A Treatment for Beauty

I am the spiritual essence of beauty. I am inner balance and perfect proportion. I align with beauty and radiate harmony and order. All discord disappears from my life. My beauty heals all feelings of separation. My beauty is eternal. I am endless newness in variation. I am the way in which life flows, in divine harmony with perfect grace and perfect ease. My beauty is in my heart, it is in my soul, it is in my mind and it is in my body now. I see the world as bright, shining and beautiful. And I hear the Word of God singing, ‘Behold I make all things new.’ I behold a beautiful world.

A Treatment for Joy

I am filled with passion and enthusiasm.  I feel the depths of the authentic life.  I am alive.  I am immersed in livingness. I open myself to the true joy of living.

Joy brings me laughter and happiness. I delight as my heart is full of gladness and expectancy. I joyfully greet each day with excitement, passion and enthusiasm. The supply of joy never stops and brings a radiant, vibrant passion for life. With joy, I allow the glory of God to manifest through me.

Prayer of the Seven Properties

I recognize that there is a Presence and a Power in this universe that has created everything out of Itself. All life proceeds out of Divine Intelligence. God is, and God is all there is. I now unify my consciousness with that very Presence and Power by embodying the Seven Divine Properties of Spirit.

I am the Essence of Light. My light is the all-pervading Light of Spirit shining through me dispelling all thoughts of darkness, separation, lack or limitation. My light shines so brightly that all darkness is eliminated and redeemed in the Light of Spirit.  I proclaim the unity and connectedness of Divine Light.

I am the Essence of Life. My life is the pulsating rhythm of the universe connecting me with all aspects of life. I am unified and one with Spirit and all the dimensions of Spirit.

I am the Essence of Love. My love is the healing power of Spirit creating and sustaining life through me. I see through the eyes of love, hear through the ears of love and continually act with the heart of love.

I am the Essence of Peace. I am the stability at the very center of my being. At this center nothing can disturb me. I feel peace filling me now. I feel the serenity, deep tranquility, and perfect calm that peace brings. As I embody peace, it radiates out, touches others and touches the world.  With perfect peace, I act with quiet power.

I am the Essence of Power. My power is the power of the creative word of the universe. I flow and glide through life allowing the power of spirit to direct me to my highest good.

I am the Essence of Beauty. My beauty is the order, the harmony and the integrity of life pulsating through me. I see beyond the superficial to the beauty of all life. I create beauty in everything I touch.

I am the Essence of Joy. I see myself as interconnected with the earth, the plants, the animals and all the people of the world. I experience and bring great joy to all I meet.

I bless my life and all life. In this consciousness of Unity, the Life, Light, Love, Peace, Power, Beauty and Joy merges and mingles with my life forever.

Step Four. I Release And I Let Go

We release our word.  We let go and let God determine through the impersonal Law how the result is to come about.  We let Spirit handle the details.

This is where the deep faith and trust of Absolute Treatment comes in. We trust Spirit to reveal the perfect right outcome. How can this outcome be anything other than glorious if we are treating from the consciousness of unity?

If God is and God is all there is and God is good, then our unification and reliance on God can bring nothing but goodness in our lives.

As we complete Absolute Treatment, we return to our everyday conscious mind.  We have great faith that the creative power of Universal Subjective Mind transforms our prayer into physical reality. When the creation is clearly seen and declared in mind, its outpicturing is inevitable.  To release is to let go and trust the universal power of creation. We have been inspired by Spirit; we have taken the inspiration and have formulated our word, our prayer, our mental equivalent. We have planted the seed of thought into subjective mind. We have realized the deepest truths about ourselves.  We now let go and let the creative power of subjective mind determine the outcome.

There is no outlining and no sense of trying to push or make things happen. It has been said, “We are on the planning committee, but we are not on the ways and means committee. The ways and means are solely the province of Spirit and we “let go and let God.”

Conclusion

The greatest gift to the world from the teachings of Science of Mind is spiritual mind treatment. We offer a type of treatment called Absolute Treatment. It is absolute because it is based on the fundamental properties of All-originating Spirit It is absolute because it focuses on First Cause. It does not deal with secondary causation or effect. It is absolute because we do not treat for things but treat from consciousness. It is absolute because it does not recognize negative causation. Darkness is only the privation of light. Disease appears as the result of a lack of the full flow of spiritual energy.

We are not in the business of manifesting things to gratify pleasures. We are in the business of revealing spiritual consciousness, the consciousness that creates a perfect world. Let us return to the quote of Ernest Holmes as he explains the real purpose of treatment.

The purpose of treatment is that the mind shall become aware of the gifts of the Spirit, shall accept them and specialize them in the experience of the individual life.” [17]

If we are successful in doing this, we shall have obtained true mastery. We shall have fulfilled the promise of Absolute Treatment.

The End

[2] Change Thinking 2:11

[3] In Creative Process in the Individual-Chapter 5-The Personal Factor, Troward explains that in order to understand what All Originating Spirit does we must discover Its substantive properties. “To begin with it must be Life. Then because it is Life it must be Love, because as the undifferentiated Principle of Life it cannot do otherwise than tend to the fuller development of life in each individual, and the pure motive of giving greater enjoyment of life is Love. Then because it is Life guided by Love it must also be Light, that is to say, the primary all-inclusive perception of boundless manifestations yet to be. Then from this proceeds Power, because there is no opposing force at the level of Pure Spirit; and therefore Life urged forward by Love or the desire for recognition, and by Light or the pure perception of the Law of Infinite Possibility, must necessarily produce Power, for the simple reason that under these conditions it could not stop short of action, for that would be the denial of the Life, Love, and Light which it is. Then because the Spirit is Life, Love, Light, and Power, it is also Peace, again for a very simple reason, that being the Spirit of the Whole it cannot set one part in antagonism against another, for that would be to destroy the wholeness. Next the Spirit must be Beauty, because on the same principle of Wholeness it must duly proportion every part to every other part, and the due proportioning of all parts is beauty. And lastly the Spirit must be Joy, because, working on these lines, it cannot do otherwise than find pleasure in the Self-expression which its works afford it, and in the contemplation of the limitlessness of the Creative Process by which each realized stage of evolution, however excellent, is still the stepping-stone to something yet more excellent, and so on in everlasting progression.

For these reasons we may sum up the Substantive Being of the All-originating Spirit as Life, Love, Light, Power, Peace, Beauty, and Joy; and its Active Power as that of Initiative and Selection.

Understanding Spiritual Mind Treatment

Spiritual Mind Treatment

In Religious Science, we use a form of prayer called Spiritual Mind Treatment. It is a scientific method of affirmative prayer that is done as a form of mental treatment to realize the health and happiness which are mankind’s normal and divine heritage. It works according to the laws of mind. We each share the One Mind and as we individually recognize and affirm the essential Goodness of Life, it reveals itself in our life.

A treatment should be done in a calm, expectant manner with a deep, inner conviction of its reality without any fear that the human mind must make it effective. Man’s life is rooted in the Universal and the Eternal, which is none other than the life of God. The healing process, so far as it may be termed a process, is in becoming conscious of this eternal truth. Treatment should always incorporate a conscious recognition that health has always been ours, abundance has always been ours, happiness and peace have always been ours; they are ours now, for they are the very essence and Truth of our being.

Steps of Spiritual Mind Treatment

1. RECOGNITION

We begin with the recognition of God as the essence of all and the very ground of all being. This is the most important step, because you are turning consciously to the truth of Life. Do not proceed with your treatment until you are fully steeped in this recognition. Speak this word of recognition that God is all.

2. UNIFICATION

Allow your emotions, body and intuition to assist in the full recognition of yourself as Divine substance. Know and feel the unity of all in God. Declare this as True. I am now thinking with the Mind of God.

3. REALIZATION

Turn completely away from the issue at hand and affirm God manifesting its perfect qualities as your life. Catch fire and thrill in this Divine realization. See it, feel it, in every detail. Open up all avenues of thought and let Reality through. Remember that you are finding and realizing this truth for yourself and that this treatment takes place within your own mind. That is all that is needed for the healing to occur. As you align your own consciousness and declare that all good is already yours by your very nature, the Power of God reveals its presence in all things.

4. GRATITUDE

Open your heart with gratitude for this Blessing occurring in your life now.

5. RELEASE

Let go. There is no more for you to do. The law is neutral and always works. Know that it is done now.

Secrets of Effective Treatment

  1. Remember to listen. Although you are praying for a specific purpose, you reals aligning yourself with Infinite wisdom. Go slowly and follow any inner guidance that directs your words and ideas into complete alignment with the Divine.
  2. Speak the word of your heart. Your own truth cannot be denied. Emphasize the inner qualities and leave the outer manifestation to God.
  3. Be passionate. Pray with fire. Miracles are at hand. It is all so amazingly Good!

Prayer is its own answer. —Ernest Holmes
